Installation instructions
Place the PINBALL.EXE file in an empty directory on your hard drive.
Then execute the file and it will decompress into a number of files.
For example, if you have placed the file in a directory named Pinball,
from a C:\ prompt you would type:
CD\PINBALL <press Enter>
PINBALL.EXE <presss Enter>
This Demo does not have a setup or install program, and it will not create its
own program group or icon. You will need to run it through the File Manager
Windows 3.1) or Windows Explorer (Windows 95) by double-clicking the
PINBALL.EXE file. If you wish to establish a Windows Program group and/or
icon for the game, please consult your Windows documentation for instructions
on how to do this.
Minimum Requirements:
To play Ultra Pinball at an acceptable speed requires a minimum of a 486DX33
with 4 MB of RAM (if you are using Windows 3.1) or 8 MB of RAM (if you are
using Windows 95). A 486DX2 66 MHz machine (or faster) with 8 MB (or more)
of RAM is recommended for optimal performance.
Controls
The controls for Ultra Pinball are listed below. They will also be presented
at the startup screen when you run the demo.
CTRL key or Left Mouse button Left Flipper
SHIFT key or Right Mouse button Right Flipper
Spacebar "Nudge" the "Table" (Please don't
shake your monitor. It won't work.)
Down Arrow & Release Shoot the Ball
The CTRL and SHIFT keys will also shift the Rollovers (The letters spelling
Outpost on the table, for example) so you can try to manipulate the ball
into rolling over the ones you have not lit yet.
Hit the glider (in the upper right hand corner), then hit the highlighted
command post to activate bonus rounds.
The side tables can only be accessed once you've destroyed the walls blocking
the entrances to them.
The Demo can only be played for 5 minutes before ending.
Troubleshooting
Below is a list of general troubleshooting steps for Windows 3.1 and Windows
95 that should help you configure your system and optimize the performance
of the 3-D Ultra Pinball on your system.
General Windows Troubleshooting
1) Create a Windows 3.1 or Windows '95 Boot Disk. We have instructions for
creating boot disks available for download from all online services. (See
the end of this document for reference.)
2) Disable any and all other Windows programs (if any) that are running
prior to starting the game. This includes all screen savers, wallpaper, etc.
3) Set your Video Display to 640 by 480, 256 colors.
Windows 3.1 Specific Steps.
1) Try using generic Microsoft Windows SVGA 256 color video drivers if
possible. If you do not have these available, they can be downloaded from
Compuserve (Go SIERRA), America On-Line (KEYWORD: SIERRA), or the Sierra
BBS at 206-644-0112. You may also be able to obtain them from your System
manufacturer.
2) Check your Swap file (also called Virtual Memory) size. From Program
manager, Double-click on Main, then on Control Panel, then on the 386
Enhanced icon. Click on Virtual Memory, then on Change. We recommend
setting up an 8 MB, Permanent Swap file. A permanent swap file is best
because it gives the fastest access time, but a Temporary Swap File doesn't
use any hard drive space when you are not using Windows. A permanent Swap
file cannot be established on a compressed drive. After you make the swap
file, you will be asked to restart Windows. Choose restart then start your
Windows program. For further information on Swap Files, please consult
your Windows documentation.
Windows '95 Specific Steps
1) Try disabling or turning off Video Acceleration. Click on START, then
Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the System icon, then click on
Performance, then Graphics. You will probably see a slider bar labeled
Hardware Acceleration. Try lowering the bar a notch (slide it to the
left), then restart Windows when you are prompted and try the game again.
Continue doing this until you cannot lower the bar any more or the problem
is corrected. If this corrects the problem, you may want to try obtaining
updated video drivers.
2) Free up memory by lowering your CD ROM Supplemental Cache Size. Again,
from Control Panel, click on System, then Performance, then File System.
Click on the tab for CD ROM. Adjust the slider bar for Supplemental Cache
Size from "Large" to "Small". Click on OK.
